Michael Broadbent's Vintage Wine by Broadbent, Michael
|
2003 James Beard Award Winner! Wine and Spirits Category! Unquestionably unique, demonstrably delightful, Michael Broadbent's Vintage Wine is the culmination of one of the most extraordinary careers in the world of wine. Michael Broadbent quite possibly knows more about fine, old wines than anyone else alive, and he writes about them with unparalleled expertise. Hired by Christie's in 1966 to revive their wine auctions, Broadbent threw himself into his work, searching out great collections of the world's finest wine--and keeping meticulous tasting notes. Here are evocations of Chateau d'Yquem from 1784--one of Thomas Jefferson's favorites--and hundreds of vintages and thousands of wines right up to the present. Years of cellars visited and pillaged, involving the checking and packing of dust- and grime-laden bottles in distinctly dank and chilly conditions, jet-set auctions around the world, legendary tastings and society events, have all helped to create an unrivalled store of vinous anecdotes as well as an unsurpassed wine-tasting history.

Cellaring Wine by Cox, Jeff
|
Jeff Cox, a connoisseur well respected in wine circles, shows you how easy it is to have a wine cellar of your own. But this is not a home-building project book. In some cases, the would-be wine collector doesn't have to do much building at all. Rather, Cellaring Wine teaches anyone who loves wine how to create a working system of selecting wines that will age well, know how to lay them down properly, and recognize them when they have matured to their full glory and are ready to be savored. Cox pinpoints the optimum conditions of temperature, light, and humidity for a wine cellar. He walks you through possible locations--whether in the basement, and old root cellar, the back of your garage, or even a closet or room in your house--and what each location requires. He explains when you'll need a climate control device (and how much they cost). And he discusses the pros and cons of buying a freestanding unit that is much like a refrigerator. Cox shows you how to keep accurate records and he gives you a crash course in appreciating the fragrance and flavor of a fine wine.

The Book of Wine by Desseauve, Thierry
|
This stunning book invites the reader into the world of wine through an outstanding collection of beautiful artwork and photography and an informative and infinitely readable text. Through the vineyards and cellars of the world one learns about the history, production, character, and diversity of good wine, and the people who produce and sell it. Since wine is made to be tasted, the author also discussed the character and diversity of good wine, from South African Riesling to Hungarian Tokay. Up-to-date methods of vinification are explained by following a flying winemaker has he hops from continent to continent. The growing fashion for varietal wine turns out to be as much a marketing decision as a wine-making-wine one. Indeed, the nature of the wine trade--and wine speculation--also figures in this book, as does the history of casks, bottles and corks. Novices and wine experts alike will find this volume, winner of the prestigious Rothschild award for wine publications, a compelling read. The fascinating stories of cellarmen, winetasters, in-depth profiles of estates and collectors of vintage wines are vividly recounted, while a section at the back of the book provides practical details on grape varieties, vintages, along with an indispensable lexicon to describe and understand the world's most noble beverage.

Fine Wines by Dovaz, Michel
|
Great wines captivate the world. Which are they, where do they come from, why are they rare? Who or what defines the great vintage years? Looking back through the 20th century, this book identifies the finest wines and recounts how they came about. Though mainly French, the exceptional wines of the century also include German, American, Australian and Italian great names. Here, author Michel Dovaz presents a work which all wine amateurs and professionals alike are looking for: a tribute to the memory of an entire century relating the testimony of those who contributed to the creation of its greatest vintages which, over the next generations, will become more and more sought after. A photo-filled spread is dedicated to the most important events that occurred during the year illustrated in each selected vintage. While these events bear no specific importance to the actual vintage year of the wine, they are of great importance in the total context that occurred in that specific period and thus becomes a great interest to wine enthusiasts and collectors.

Wall Street Journal Guide to Wine, Second Edition by Gaiter, Dorothy and Brecher, John
|
Since their first book appeared, the authors have received thousands of appreciative letters and emails from readers, many of them raising new questions about the wine world. Addressing many of these queries, discussing more great finds, and widening the scope of previous topics, this revised edition is better than ever. Instead of simply updating the vintages in the previous edition, Gaiter and Brecher have scoured the wineshops for dozens of additional selections, covering rose champagnes, for example, and extending the Savignon Blanc discussion to New Zealand. As for the practical advice that has endeared the couple to so many fans, the authors explore entirely new roads with chapters such as Wine and Business, How to Impress the Boss, When Wine is a Pain, The Headache Issue, and Don't Be Embarrassed About the Blue Nun in Your Past, as well as new passages on everything from cork etiquette to great Kosher wines.

Wine for Every Day and Every Occasion by Gaiter, Dorothy J. and Brecher, John
|
Your most memorable wine drinking experience probably didn't involve a perfectly aged Cristal. More likely, it was that Chianti you had in Italy, or the 10 chardonnay you enjoyed at a concert in the park. That's because the most important element of wine is not the vintage or the vineyard, but the occasion on which it is enjoyed. The lively reviews and suggestions in Wine for Every Day and Every Occasion make selecting wines simple and pleasurable. Dorothy and John answer all your questions, like what wine should I lay down for my newborn that he or she can drink on their 21st birthday? What wine is best with Thanksgiving turkey? What are dessert wines? What wine goes best with take-out? And what are the best reds for summer barbecue parties? Each chapter includes lists of specific wines providing readers with targeted advice like what champagne to drink on New Year's Eve or how to hail a good cab. Above all, Wine for Every Day and Every Occasion emphasizes the fact that wine should be fun and part of everyday living.

American Vintage: The Rise of American Wine by Lukacs, Paul
|
Just two generations ago, the United States was little more than a footnote in the world of wine. Then, seemingly overnight, everything changed, and American varietals began outscoring the best French wines in international competitions. How did a country with virtually no premium winemaking tradition of its own suddenly become a world leader in the industry? In American Vintage, Paul Lukacs traces the rise of American wine and the quirky heroes and visionaries who altered the course of wine history: Nicholas Longworth, the founding father of American wine, a diminutive real estate tycoon who transformed Ohio into the American Rhineland; Dr. Charles Welch, a Methodist preacher who created nonalcoholic grape juice in the name of temperance; Gustave Niebaum, a Finnish sea captain who made a fortune in the fur trade before establishing one of California's first great vineyards, Inglenook; and the secretive Gallo brothers and Robert Mondavi, who held opposing views about the direction American wine should take. As Lukacs tells his colorful story, he reveals as much about our culture as he does about the wine industry itself.

Cabernet: A Photographic Journey by O'Rear, Charles
|
Many wine connoisseurs consider the complex flavors of a fine cabernet sauvignon to be unmatched by any other variety, giving it a widely held reputation as the supreme accomplishment in the art of winemaking. To create such a richly textured wine takes more than excellent grapes; it requires an incredible level of dedication and skill in every stage of the process. To produce this handsome book, photographer Charles O'Rear followed cabernet harvests across four continents, chronicling the elaborate journey from vine to bottle. O'Rear is a photojournalist who uses his camera much as a writer wields a pen--to tell a story. His choice of subjects, composition, and settings are clearly influenced by his many years contributing to National Geographic magazine. Here he presents an interesting series of subtle and imaginative full-color photos that capture the essence of the unique people and age-old methods they utilize to conceive this world-renowned wine. The accompanying text is sparse yet informative, and the famous winemaker Robert Mondavi provides a brief forward as well.

Accidental Connoisseur by Osborne, Lawrence
|
What is taste? Is it individual or imposed on us from the outside? Why are so many of us so intimidated when presented with the wine list at a restaurant? In The Accidental Connoisseur, journalist Lawrence Osborne takes off on a personal voyage through a little-known world in pursuit of some answers. Weaving together a fantastic cast of eccentrics and obsessives, industry magnates and small farmers, the author explores the way technological change, opinionated critics, consumer trends, wheelers and dealers, trade wars, and mass market tastes have made the elixir we drink today entirely different from the wine drunk by our grandparents. In his search for wine that is a true expression of the place that produced it, Osborne takes the reader from the high-tech present to the primitive past. From a lavish lunch with wine tsar Robert Mondavi to the cellars of Marquis Piero Antinori in Florence, from the tasting rooms of Chateau Lafite to the humble vineyards of northern Lazio, Osborne winds his way through Renaissance palaces, 27 million wineries, tin shacks and garages, opulent restaurants, world-famous chais and vineyards, renowned villages and obscure landscapes, as well as the great cities which are the temples of wine consumption: New York, San Francisco, Paris, Florence, and Rome. On the way, we will be shown the vast tapestry of this much-desired, little-understood drink: who produces it and why, who consumes it, who critiques it? Enchanting, delightful, entertaining, and, above all, down to earth, this is a wine book like no other.

Overstreet's New Wine Guide by Overstreet, Dennis; Gibbons, David
|
There has never been a more exciting time to explore the pleasures of fine wine. Thanks to a new generation of talented winemakers who are marrying the best of traditional viticulture with innovative technologies, today premium wine is being produced in more places, giving the consumer an unprecedented array of choices in every price range. Dennis Overstreet, whose store, The Wine Merchant, Beverly Hills, has been a Los Angeles fixture for more than a decade, feels wine has for too long been veiled in a shroud of elitism and arcane language. As one of the foremost wine retailers in the country, he is on a mission to show would-be connoisseurs at every level of sophistication how to increase their enjoyment of wine and challenge their palates with new experiences. Unlike other wine guides, Overstreet's does not offer ratings; instead he provides road signs that help guide readers through a thrilling journey of discovery of their own. He introduces some of the most important people and places in the wine world today, and offers pointers on searching out intriguing, little-known wines. He then goes on to break down what exactly we mean when we say a wine is good--or even great--so readers can expand their wine vocabulary and communicate their preferences more effectively. And because he believes there is no substitute for popping corks--that is, tasting, tasting, and more tasting--he provides guidelines for starting a wine collection and organizing a wine tasting at home or in a restaurant. Overstreet also addresses the often-tricky business of matching wines with food, drawing on the expertise of some of the country's foremost sommeliers and chefs, and shares his recommendations for getting the most from a wine retailer or restaurant wine list. And in an extensive directory of wines and winemakers by country, Dennis Overstreet offers his highly subjective nominations for the world's best wines. Filled with insights gleaned from a life dedicated to the appreciation of this intriguing and rewarding beverage, Overstreet's New Wine Guide will help novices and experts alike derive more pleasure from their wine and encourage them to expand their horizons with every bottle. Dennis Overstreet, California's premier wine merchant, presents his shortcuts to making every glass a moment worth savoring, spotlighting the most exciting new names and places in wine today. He shows how to: spot wines that are beyond their prime, stock a wine cellar, host a wine tasting, build a relationship with a wine retailer, seek out little-known vintages and makers, get the best service from a sommelier, pair wine with a variety of foods, and much more.

X Rated Wines by Roberts, Darryl, Dorman, Stuart and Wine-X Magazin
|
Wine-X Magazine is today's fastest-growing wine magazine. It's for everyone who's tired of pedantic wine critics, stuffy wine magazines and wine reviews that read like vegetarian grocery lists. At the heart of this book are over 1500 wine reviews; but in place of the staid and tired assessments of many other wine publications, these get to the essence of the wine's appeal while being fun and entertaining. Consider their review of one cabernet The Mick Jagger of cabernets--bold, spicy, struttin' and full of lip. Each wine is awarded one of the magazine's trademark classifications from one X (gets it done), through two X's (killer), to three X's (exceptionally cool). X-Rated Wines also offers just enough background information to teach readers a thing or two about the wines their enjoying, as well as amusing sidebars like Top 10 Fast Food and Wine Pairings and the Top 10 Wine References in Movies.

A TIME TO SHOP; A TIME TO BUY
Now the weather's improving, the days are getting a bit longer, the sun is shining (at least for a little while) and the awful ice and snow storms are hopefully behind us for one more season. This is the time of the season that people get over the post-Christmas blues (we're talking about early March and beyond). The bills are mostly paid up from the big Christmas shopping blast, the longer days improve the overall human well-being, the tax work is nearly done and we're all looking forward to a bright spring and summer.
So when we're over the blues and ready to shop we have to ask the question. Are we looking or are we buying? And if we're buying, what are we buying? That's the question. And the answer is … everything. People are shopping for and buying just about everything. Whether it's from stores, catalogs or on the Internet, people are buying everything. The list is long and diverse and it keeps growing. When the weather picks up we're happy to buy everything we've been thinking about when we coddled the blues of winter. Thing like clothes, shoes, shirt and pants. Golf gear, sporting goods (don't we long to hit some golf clubs, toss a ball, swing a tennis racket and shoot some hoops?). Cooking gear, now that the blues are gone we're ready for some celebrations of life … both indoor and out. We need cooking and serving gear for our kitchen, whether our kitchen is a traditional indoor kitchen or if we're a trend setter (or a close trend follower) and we're developing or have developed the new breed of kitchen - the outdoor kitchen). Whatever we have or whatever we're going to have we need the stuff of life to fix food and drink for friends, family and casual acquaintances.
We're looking for fashion accessories, watches and other time pieces. Wristwatches, stop watches (I like to time my 3-times per week runs with a stop watch) or a pocket watch (becoming trendier for some who eschew the traditional wrist watch).
We're looking for everything and we're often finding these products from sources we wouldn't have imagined and through channels that we've only recently begun investigating. Make new acquaintances with some great emerging brands; get great products, great prices and overall great deals on the Internet.
We're happy that you've contemplated our assortment of Cookbooks Beverages Wine - General.
If you should make the choice that you're not looking for something that is not in the category of Cookbooks Beverages Wine - General, we hope
