Cookbooks Around the World Asian
Hot Sour Salty Sweet by Alford, Jeffrey and Duguid, Naomi
|
The culinary map of Southeast Asia is about to change if award-winning authors Jeffrey Alford and Naomi Duguid have anything to do with it. Recognizing that the wonderful flavors of Southeast Asia spill over national borders, Alford and Duguid set out to eat their way through the region's towns and villages, large and small, all the while collecting recipes, cooking techniques, stores and photographs. This book is the glorious result of their travels through the Mekong region of Southeast Asia, a fascinating area that extends south from China, through Laos and Thailand, to Cambodia and Vietnam. The book's more than 175 recipes for spicy salsas, welcoming soups, grilled meat salads and exotic desserts are accompanied by evocative stories about places and people. The recipes and stories are gorgeously illustrated throughout with more than 150 full color food and travel photographs. Through the course of their travels in the Mekong region, Alford and Duguid came to realize that the local cuisinesâjust like those of the Mediterraneanâshare a common creative genius in the kitchen, a distinctive palate. This shared culinary approach emerges as the book unfolds. In each chapter, from Salsas to Street Food, Noodles to Desserts, dishes from different cuisines within the region appear side by side. A hearty Lao chicken soup is next to a Vietnamese ginger-chicken soup; a Thai vegetable stir-fry comes after Spicy Stir-Fried Potatoes from Southwest China. The book invites a flexible approach to cooking and eating, for dishes from different places can be happily served and eaten together; Khmer Stir-Fried Pork with Green Beans pairs well with Grilled Tomato Salsa from China and Thai jasmine rice; Thai Grilled Chicken with Hot and Sweet Dipping Sauce goes beautifully with Vietnamese Green Papaya Salad and Lao sticky rice. At last, the incredible flavors of this great culinary region are celebrated with all the passion, color and life that they deserve.

Sake by Aoki, Rocky
|
Saké, the Japanese wine distilled from rice and an essential part of Japanese culture for more than 2,000 years, is suddenly becoming one of the hippest alcoholic beverages in the U. S. and abroad. The current rise of saké bars and saké-influenced drinks such as the sakétini are delicious evidence of this newly gained popularity. Despite this newfound buzz, most Westerners know very little about this traditional drink. There are more varieties of saké than there are of red and white wines combined. Saké is supposed to be served chilled. Only low-grade saké is heated, mainly to hide the inferior quality of the drink. In Japan, saké is rarely served with sushi, which is ironic as most Americans who drink saké only drink it with sushi. Rocky Aoki, the founder of the famous Benihana and Haru restaurants examines how the rice is grown and brewed, supplies fascinating background and history of saké in Japanese culture, describes the different varieties of saké, discusses which sakés should accompany different types of foods, and where one can purchase saké. With the same zest that he has brought to his phenomenally successful Benihana chain, which introduced the world to Japanese cuisine, Aoki will share the joy of saké. Also included is an extensive appendix guide to 100 brands of saké that are commonly found in the United States and are considered the most popular brands based on quality, price, and availability.

Silk Road Cooking : A Vegetarian Journey by Batmanglij, Najmieh K.
|
This book is at once an exploration, a celebration, and a little-known tale of unity. It presents 150 delicious vegetarian dishes that together trace a fascinating story of culinary linkage. As renowned cookbook writer and teacher Najmieh Batmanglij explains, all have their origins along the ancient network of trade routes known as the Silk Road, stretching from China in the east to the Mediterranean in the west. On this highway moved not just trade goods but also ideas, customs, tastes and such basics of life as cooking ingredients. The result was the connecting and enrichment of dozens of cuisines. In Silk Road Cooking: A Vegetarian Journey, Najmieh Batmanglij recounts that process and brings it into the modern kitchen in the form of recipes that are venturesome and yet within reach of any cook. They are intended for vegetarian, partial-vegetarian and non-vegetarian alike--anyone who is looking for balanced, unusual and exceptionally tasty dishes. The book offers a wealth of information derived from the author's extensive research and her travels along the Silk Road during the past 25 years. She complements the recipes with stories, pictures, histories of ingredients, and words of wisdom from her favorite poets and writers of the region. The scope of her culinary journey of discovery is vast--from Xian in China, to Samarkand in present-day Uzbekistan, to Isfahan in Iran, to Istanbul in Turkey, and to the westernmost terminus of the ancient trade routes in Italy. Her recipes--all of them personal favorites--include such exotic yet simple fare as Sichuan Crispy Cucumber Pickles; Afghan Boulani, a savory pastry stuffed with garlic chives; Persian Pomegranate and Walnut Salad; Kermani Pistachio and Saffron Polow with Rose Petals; Chinese Hot and Sour Tofu Noodle Soup; Turkish Almond and Rice Flour Pudding; Uzbek Candied Quince with Walnuts; and Sicilian Sour Cherry Crostata. Fortunately, all the ingredients for these recipes can be obtained at local supermarkets and farmers' markets. In recent years America has become a kind of modern Silk Road, where wonderful ingredients from all over the world are available to everyone.

Tea In The East by Manchester, Carole
|
There is no more refined ritual than that of tea drinking in Asia. In Tea in the East, Carole Manchester, author of French Tea, invites you on a journey to the earliest tea-producing countries -- China, Japan, India, Sri Lanka -- to savor the pleasures of the ancient brew. Lavishly illustrated with beautiful full-color photographs of tea ceremonies and their exotic settings, Tea in the East evokes the tranquillity and unique pleasures of the Eastern tea. In China, aged tea leaves are steeped for seconds in a tiny clay pot and poured into doll-sized handleless cups, the earthy taste savored as if it were a rare wine. In a still, silent room in Kyoto, powdered green tea is reverently whisked in a ceramic bowl in preparation for the tea ceremony. On the lawn of a planters' club in India, tea is served in cups covered with tiny beaded doilies to keep the tea free from dust. Eastern tea ceremonies embody a rare grace in both their gentle choreography and in the decorative and functional beauty of the tea service. In China, the fashion of drinking tea inspired the craftsmanship of exquisite porcelain and ceramic teaware. In Japan, artisans create starkly simple teabowls, whisks, lacquer trays, and boxes. The teas of India are served in teacups made of silver. As delicate and elegant as the utensils of the Eastern tea ceremony itself are their sweet and savory accompaniments. Dim sum, tiny stuffed delicacies, are served with a Cantonese tea; a bitter Japanese tea is balanced by seasonal bean curd sweets; Indians serve hot and spicy pastries with milky, sugary tea; and Sri Lankans drink their tea with crepe-like pastries called hoppers. Together with the story of tea in the East, you'll find recipes for tempting and unusual tea accompaniments, including a savory Green Tea-Marinated Chicken Sandwich, Marbled Tea Eggs, and the Russian Tea Room Spice Cake. The varieties of Asian teas are as distinctive as their traditions. Using Tea in the East as a guide, you can explore the many satisfying tastes and aromas: the flowery Pai Mu Tan, a rare mix of two white tea plants from China; Japan's finest green tea, Gyokuro; Genmaicha, which is mixed with roasted rice that gives it a popcorn flavor; Darjeelings and robust Assam teas of India: and the exquisite afternoon teas of Ceylon. Also included are recipes for iced teas and tea remedies, as well as suggestions for the many practical uses of tea, storage methods, and a buyer's source guide.

Lilla's Feast by Osborne, Frances
|
Frances Osborne's great-grandmother Lilla lived to be a hundred, and so Frances knew her as an old woman, elegant, charming, and mysterious. In this vivid, sweeping narrative, Frances conjures up Lilla's incredible life. Born an identical twin in a British trading port in Chefoo, North China, in 1882, Lilla knew both great privilege and deprivation, love and its absence. Her story is brimming with the stuff of good fiction: exotic locales, improvident marriages, an evil mother-in-law, a dramatic suicide, two world wars, and, of course, international cuisine. From the noodles of Shanghai to the chutney of British of British India to the roast of England, Lilla was brought up to believe that good food and sensuous surroundings could carry one a kong way to happiness. And in the absence of such, Lilla used her imagination. While held captive in the internment camp, she wrote a complete Mrs. Beeton-like cookbook, which is now in the Imperial War Museum of London and runs as a theme throughout this delicious book.

A TIME TO SHOP; A TIME TO BUY
Now the weather's improving, the days are getting a bit longer, the sun is shining (at least for a little while) and the awful ice and snow storms are hopefully behind us for one more season. This is the time of the season that people get over the post-Christmas blues (we're talking about early March and beyond). The bills are mostly paid up from the big Christmas shopping blast, the longer days improve the overall human well-being, the tax work is nearly done and we're all looking forward to a bright spring and summer.
So when we're over the blues and ready to shop we have to ask the question. Are we looking or are we buying? And if we're buying, what are we buying? That's the question. And the answer is … everything. People are shopping for and buying just about everything. Whether it's from stores, catalogs or on the Internet, people are buying everything. The list is long and diverse and it keeps growing. When the weather picks up we're happy to buy everything we've been thinking about when we coddled the blues of winter. Thing like clothes, shoes, shirt and pants. Golf gear, sporting goods (don't we long to hit some golf clubs, toss a ball, swing a tennis racket and shoot some hoops?). Cooking gear, now that the blues are gone we're ready for some celebrations of life … both indoor and out. We need cooking and serving gear for our kitchen, whether our kitchen is a traditional indoor kitchen or if we're a trend setter (or a close trend follower) and we're developing or have developed the new breed of kitchen - the outdoor kitchen). Whatever we have or whatever we're going to have we need the stuff of life to fix food and drink for friends, family and casual acquaintances.
We're looking for fashion accessories, watches and other time pieces. Wristwatches, stop watches (I like to time my 3-times per week runs with a stop watch) or a pocket watch (becoming trendier for some who eschew the traditional wrist watch).
We're looking for everything and we're often finding these products from sources we wouldn't have imagined and through channels that we've only recently begun investigating. Make new acquaintances with some great emerging brands; get great products, great prices and overall great deals on the Internet.
We're happy that you've contemplated our assortment of Cookbooks Around the World Asian.
If you should make the choice that you're not looking for something that is not in the category of Cookbooks Around the World Asian, we hope
that you'll another product choice that suits your needs here at our website.
